The Charles Bridge is possibly the most renowned landmark in Prague and is certainly popular with the tourists! The bridge dates back to 1347 and is the oldest bridge in Prague, it was built to connect the Old Town with Malá Strana and was renamed from the Stone Bridge to it’s current name in 1870 after it’s founder, King Charles IV.
You will be bespectacled at the sight of this monument, adorned with 30 statues of saints and personages, although these are now replicas with the originals being housed in the Lapidarium Museum. Many tourists visit the spot where St. John of Nepomuk was thrown from the bridge to make a wish, this is marked with a small brass cross.
Prague Castle is now recognised as a national cultural monument, dating back to the year 870 A.D when the first walled building was constructed (The Church of the Virgin Mary). Since then the castle’s development has continued almost uninterrupted for the past 11 centuries and has been home to Royalty, Emperors and Presidents of Czechoslovakia and nowadays, the Czech Republic.
The Bohemian Crown Jewels are contained within the castle in a hidden room. Prague Castle has been described by the Guinness Book of world Records as the largest ancient castle in the world covering 70,000 square metres!
The PetÅ™ín View Tower is another must see spectacle. Opened in 1891, this 60 meter viewing platform was inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris and was closed in 1979.
