Netherlands Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a bustling city hub, mixing cultures, history, art, great food, Dutch tradition and much, much more!

It is easy to see why thousands of Brits flock to this beautiful canal side city year on year! With its infamous street cafes, glorious history and different life style which will give you a massive culture shock, Amsterdam should be your choice of city break this year!

Culture & Historic Sights

From its humble beginnings in the 13th century until the present day, Amsterdam has always been a resourceful city. Starting as a structure of dams and dikes on the marshland surrounding the river Amstel, Amsterdam quickly grew to become one of the main Import/Export cities of Europe. With the addition of a controlled toll crossing on the river, Amsterdam became very prosperous in the beer and herring trade.

The first of these dam’s is marked by the Square in the heart of the city today, a must see for all budding tourists!

Amsterdam features some renowned architecture and unique building styles in the whole of Europe, if not the world. Some favourites include the canal district, with it’s narrow town houses lining the canal sides – this building style is typical of the Dutch Golden Age, Central Station, the Theatre Carre and the Hotel Americain – all of which depict monumental architecture, evidence of the prosperity of the city!

Dining & Drinking

There is a huge variety of dining options in Amsterdam. From the likes of the artistic Proef restaurant where the owner, and self-proclaimed ‘food designer’, creates absolute masterpieces from the simplest of dishes such as Asparagus soup served in a glass jar to the wide range of cocktails made fresh with ingredients from the garden out back!

A cheap and cheerful alternative is any one of the ‘Brown Cafes’. These welcoming cafes serve traditional, home cooked meals. Enjoy a coffee or snack on the terrace overlooking one of the canals or try something a little different such as Ossenwurst – a spicy raw beef sausage!

Whatever you fancy, you are guaranteed to find it in Amsterdam! From home cooked meals and budget friendly café’s to the more upmarket and modern Dutch restaurants, you will not go hungry!

Amsterdam also features many cocktail bars and cafes serving fresh cocktails, chilled beers and wines as well as all kinds of spirits. From a romantic tipple to a heavy night out, you’re sure to find something to suit! You can even try a beer sampling event, how cool is that?

Shopping

Shopping in Amsterdam is endless!

From the jewellers, boutiques and vintage stores found in the narrow streets of the De Negen Straatjes district (The Nine Streets), to the designer labels of DKNY, Chanel, Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger to name a few found on the exclusive street of the P.C Hooftstraat.

The Magna Plaza is located behind Dam Square and is home to De Bijenkorf, Amsterdams best-known department stores. The 2 most popular shopping streets are the Kalverstraat and Leidsesstraat in the city centre. Here you will find more recognisable brands such as H&M, Zara & Esprit.
